The Sixteenth Gyalwa Karmapa - Rangjung Rigpe Dorje, was brought into the world in Denkhog in the region of Derge, East Tibet. His dad's name was Tsewang Phuntsok, and his mom's name was Kelzang Dolma. Having been told by a couple of experts in Derge that she would bear an extraordinary Bodhisattva, Kelzang Dolma went to remain in a holy cavern that was once utilized by Guru Rinpoche and there she anticipated the introduction of her child. She was joined by a Khenpo who educated her on the purifying service. It is expressed that close to the furthest limit of her pregnancy, the future Karmapa vanished from her belly for an entire day. He returned and Kelzang Dolma experienced typical pregnancy once more. Those people who were available on the propitious day of his introduction to the world heard the new-conceived child share with his mom that he would leave soon.

The conditions of His Holiness' introduction to the world harmonized definitively with the expectation letter composed by the Fifteenth Karmapa, which he had given to Jampal Tsultim, his chaperon. Jampal Tsultrim gave the letter to the devout specialists at Tsurphu Monastery, who then, at that point, asked the Eleventh Tai Situpa, Pema Wangchug Gyalpo, and the Second Jamgon Kongtrul Rinpoche, Pälden Khyentse Öser, to explain specific focuses. A pursuit party was conveyed. They found the kid, carried him to His Eminence Tai Situpa, who remembered him as the rebirth of the Fifteenth Gyalwa Karmapa. While actually dwelling at Palpung Gon in Derge and at 8 years old, the kid took the Bodhisattva promises, was appointed, and got the Black Vajra Crown and robes of the past Karmapa that were brought to Palpung from Tsurphu. Tai Situpa gave him the name Rangjung Khyabdak Rigpe Dorje. While heading to his enthronement at Palpung, the Karmapa halted to visit and favor the Derge Monastic Publishing House, consequently preparing to later distribute the Buddhist standard in India. Tai Situ Rinpoche then, at that point, went with him on the long excursion to Tsurphu, the seat of the Karmapas in Central Tibet, where the Sixteenth Karmapa was welcomed by Goshir Gyaltsab Rinpoche, Jamgon Kongtrul Rinpoche, and Nenang Pawo Rinpoche.
